Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
posted Sunday, October 1, 2006

Okay, first of all I would like say that this run is more of a test run than an actual speedrun. Yes, I do finish the game quickly, but I made so many mistakes that you would probably call me a noob (I can probably tell you at least 30 mistakes I made). Even with all the mistakes I still decided to release this video since there really hasn't been a DoS speedrun ever.

I feel that we should talk about the quality of the video rather than the run for the moment since without video/sound quality, a run would never exist in the first place. Reasons for letting all the errors slide is because I have only one save file to play on, meaning once I save, I save and that's the end of that segment. No way
to compare segments since I would need at least 2 save files for that. Also with only 1 save file, I can't check the video camera for any errors like sound until I actually finish the segment. That again needs at least 2 save files for if I mess up in some way, I can just redo it. So if you noticed too much screen shaking or no sound
and wonder why I didn't redo it, then now you know why. Also finding a good position to sit and play while recording was also a big pain. I pretty much changed positions in almost every segment until I found one that was quite relaxing and didn't cause the screen to shake as much. If you got a good playing position you would like to share, please say so in the forum link at the bottom of this commentary. As for the screen not being that bright, I'm using a normal DS (got no DS Lite).

Okay now a bit about the actual run. The record is 35:54. The record I must admit is terrible, but decent at best. Yes I do plan on releasing a version 1.1 with a much better time (probably aiming for 30-32 mins or even under 30 mins), but I would need another DoS game for it. Yes buying another DoS isn't as much as a problem as buying a DS Lite, so it's possible. Other than that the techniques used is pretty self-explanatory although it wasn't really well planned, so things can still improve by a lot.

If you have video capturing comments or tactics on speedrunning New Game+, feel free to talk about it at the forum. If things go right next time, you can expect a lot more DoS speedruns and even PoR. :)

P.S. Thanks to StuckinaPlate and Serris for the awesome tactics.
