Castlevania Portrait of Ruin
Jonathan & Charlotte basics and techniques

Why use Jonathan over Charlotte?

+ Can super jump
+ Can use special attack
+ Can use special commands
+ Can dive kick
+ Having Charlotte out or not does not make any difference

- Charlotte as backup unable to charge spells

If you're going for Jonathan with Charlotte as backup, it's a more aggressive set up because you'll be using the killing machine of the pair while the backup supports you with spells and buffs.

Why use Charlotte over Jonathan?

+ Can charge her spells
+ Having Jonathan out as backup will enable you to spam sub weapons (hold R button)

- No super jump
- No special attack
- No special commands
- No dive kick
- Lack of combos

If you're going for Charlotte with Jonathan as backup, it's more of a stable team since both of you will be doing comparable damage (your attacks and charged spells versus Jonathan's subweapon spamming and brute strength).

To be honest, I see no reason to use Charlotte as the lead other than for her charged buffs but you can use them by switching to Jonathan anyway. Even with her charged offensive spells and speedstar accessory, they still get outdamaged by Jonathan's brute strength later.

How to gain charged spell buffs from Charlotte while using Jonathan?

You will need to use Charlotte while having Jonathan out (on screen) for back up. Charge up her spell and simply change to Jonathan. Will not work if Jonathan isn't out.

Tips on switching characters

Switching characters when your backup isn't active will enable you to switch automatically. Switching characters when your backup is active will take half second to switch. Keep this in mind if you are speed running or doing boss rush.

Buffering Jonathan's Critical attack

While moving forward you can simply pull off a special attack with forward + Y instead of forward x 2 + Y.

Fastest way of moving around?

Fastest
1) Charlotte's Speed Up spell (charged) + jump kicks
2) Charlotte's Speed Up spell + jump kicks
3) Winged Boots + jump kicks
4) Mercury Boots + jump kicks
5) Running + jump kicks

Adding jump kicks while moving is always faster than not adding them. Just make sure you jump kick high enough. Not too high or else you will roll once you land, and not too low or else you won't be gaining any extra distance.

Fastest way of going down?

Dive kick straight down (not diagonal unless it's a must since you will roll on the ground when you land). Once landing, jump to get out of delay (same technique as Alucard for SotN).

Jonathan subweapon spam

The same as Soma's soul spam in DoS. Throw a subweapon, backdash cancel it (L button), throw again and repeat. Knives and Darts can be spammed infinitely. Other subweapons have a limited amount on how many can be onscreen at once.
